Registration for our second Annual Congress of 2022 in Dubrovnik, Croatia is now open with the theme: ‘Resilience in the face of adversity’.

Held at the Rixos Premium Dubrovnik, there will be 2 days of technical sessions (10 hours for CPE) with expert keynote speakers and panel discussions, as well as the usual ancillary meetings, networking opportunities and our wonderful Gala Dinner.

The city of Dubrovnik lies in the far south of the arc that forms Croatian soil, located on the thin coastal strip between the high hills and the calmness of the Adriatic sea. Dubrovnik is filled with outstanding natural beauty and many efforts have been made to preserve its varied ecological sites. The city offers an astonishingly clear blue sea, unique flora and fauna, scenic sunsets and a warm Mediterranean climate.

Counting only about 30,000 people, Dubrovnik is the cultural and social centre of the region, the County of Dubrovnik-Neretva and the most famous city of Croatia.

Known as “The Pearl of the Adriatic”, the city of Dubrovnik is featured by the fairytale appearance of the Old Town (a World Heritage site) and its white stone defensive walls with mighty forts and towers. More than two-thirds of the Old Town’s buildings suffered bomb damage and were entirely rebuilt after the Croatian War of Independence. Dubrovnik’s white walls reflect survival and resilience, a message of hope.

Keynote Speakers

This year we are very pleased to announce that we have secured four significant keynote speakers as well as academics and a broad range of panellists from our membership.

Bojan Fras, Vice-governor of the Croatian National Bank, responsible for coordinating and managing the Legal Area and the Consumer Protection Monitoring Office will open our Congress, followed by José Garrido, Senior Counsel in the IMF’s Legal Department.

The second day of our Congress will start with Fabris Peruško, CEO and member of the Management Board of Fortenova Group, Croatia. Lord Justice Snowden from the Court of Appeal of England & Wales will then share with the audience his extensive experience in restructuring cases, followed by a discussion with other judges.

Technical Programme

Our facilitator in Dubrovnik will be Frances Coulson (Wedlake Bell, UK), who, along with her fellow Co-Chair Jelenko Lehki (Lehki Law Office, Croatia), and our expert technical committee, have been working on the technical programme. The overall academic conference's theme will be “Insolvency Law in Times of Crisis”.

As you will see in the link above, we once again have a broad selection of papers on cutting-edge topics in the fields of insolvency and restructuring, all this only half-year after our extremely well attended and received conference in Dublin. In Dublin, we could have attributed the number and the quality of papers submitted to us to the Covid-induced break in conference activities. However, the equally impressive number and quality of submissions attracted by our call for papers for Dubrovnik must really be taken as a sign of the impressive depth and breadth of academic research conducted in our field in Europe, and beyond. 

We are excited and proud that INSOL Europe’s Academic Forum has become the prime platform in which this research is presented, shared and debated in Europe. The one innovation that Dubrovnik will bring about is the new “Open Forum: The Implementation Agora” – the last session of the academic conference which, after an impromptu experiment in Dublin, will be open to the delegates of the main Congress as well. The open forum is intended to give academics and practitioners an opportunity to share and discuss their experiences with the implementation of the preventive restructuring directive across the EU in an informal setting, and we would very much like to invite delegates registered for the main conference to pop in to this last session on Thursday afternoon and participate in what we hope will be an event that will be entertaining as well as informative.

This Congress marks the end of INSOL Europe's 40th anniversary year and will be the first ‘real time’ event that we have organised in nearly two years since the COVID-19 pandemic descended upon us. As our focus shifts from the pandemic to what lies ahead, it is befitting that we celebrate our ‘return to normal’ and our 40th anniversary with all of you in Dublin, a great city, full of history and promises for the future.

We have chosen the theme and title “Back to the Future 2”, following our 2021 Autumn Online Conference, titled “Back to the Future” for our Congress. This theme is primarily a reference to the EU Directive on Restructuring and Insolvency and the status of the implementation process in the various jurisdictions, but it was equally chosen as a tribute to our members and the profession as a whole for their remarkable capacity to adjust and evolve and meet the various challenges of the past two years with extraordinary resilience and creativity. 

We owe a huge thank you to our dedicated Congress Technical Committee, who have prepared a wonderful programme under the supervision of the Co-Chairs Barry Cahir from Ireland and Giorgio Corno from Italy.
