We have the lowest number of insolvency cases in the last 10 years - and apparently that's good news. But, over the same time interval, we also have, according to studies, the highest number of companies in distress or even in undeclared insolvency. There’s constant talk that undeclared insolvencies are even more dangerous to the economy, and even to the entrepreneur, than the declared ones.

Why do entrepreneurs not call on a specialist to deal with the distress, and what does dealing with distress mean?

We invite you to find the answers to these questions, from the best specialists in the field: restructuration experts, financial analysts, lawyers, magistrates, psychologists, or crisis communication consultants.

Although the city has a modern metro system, about one-fifth of the workforce still relies on the time-honoured bicycle for transportation.

Technical Programme

Our Technical Committee Co-Chairs Alice van der Schee (Van Benthem & Keulen, The Netherlands) and Carmel King (Grant Thornton, UK) together with their dream team are currently finalising the technical programme of 13 & 14 October 2023 whose overall theme is “Navigating insolvency with trust and integrity” and will include key topics such as:

Sustainable Venue
Our venue for 2023, the Hotel Okura, takes its environmental and sustainable impact seriously. The hotel management is committed to protecting the environment by using, for example, paperless check-in, featuring seasonal products on their menu and using biodegradable alternatives for cleaning and dish-washing. They are aiming to reduce their carbon footprint by reduction of energy consumption by adjusting their equipment, technical installations and operating methods to make them as efficient as possible, for example through generating their own energy through solar panels and a well for thermal energy storage. Their goals are shared by all their staff and suppliers with similar ambitions to take responsibility to positively impact the environment and society.

Amsterdam's main airport, Schiphol, might be the busiest airport in the Netherlands, but there are many sustainable transport options for travelling to the city, e.g., by train – and once there, the options include cycling, walking, low-energy buses and trams, and not forgetting of course, canal boat. Amsterdam is colloquially referred to as the "Venice of the North", for its large number of canals, now designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Our highly current and fascinating papers emphasise that insolvency law in Europe never lacks innovation, never ceases to improve, and constantly challenges academics to keep up. It is the hard work and research of academics, the innovation of practitioners, and the proposals by policy makers that build the foundations of European legal reform. And it is this legal reform that improves our legal framework, secures employment and enhances the welfare of all Europeans. In the last 10 years, this is particularly true for European insolvency and restructuring law.

New legislation is the visible top of an iceberg of research. The IEAF conference is the best opportunity to see the research that maintains the top of the iceberg, covering a tremendous amount of supporting work, research, pedagogy, and collaborations carrying on beneath. The purpose of this conference is to turn that iceberg upside down and highlight the work of researchers and practitioners forming the foundations of legal reform - past, present and future. We can make that effort visible thanks to an unprecedented number of outstanding submissions.

The range of subjects covered by this year’s conference reaches from the latest implementation of the preventive restructuring directive to the proposed insolvency harmonization regulation. But the meat in between - digital assets, asset tracing and sustainability – are vital and modern component parts of the frameworks that function to resolve financial distress throughout Europe.
